Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras, meaning "Fat Tuesday" in French, is one of the best-known festivals in the United States and is most famous in New Orleans. Celebrated on the day before Ash Wednesday, it marks the end of the Carnival season. The tradition was introduced to North America by French explorers in the late 17th century and grew into New Orleans' most famous annual celebration, known for its parades, masked costumes, music and festive events.

Kutztown Folk Festival

The Pennsylvania Dutch Folk Festival takes place each year in Kutztown, usually from late June to early July, including the 4th of July. It focuses on the culture of the Pennsylvania Dutch through local crafts, farming methods, food and customs. The community is descended from German immigrants who settled in the region during the early and mid-1700s to practise their religion freely.

Aloha Festival

Aloha Festivals is the largest celebration of Hawaiian culture in the United States. It began in 1946 as Aloha Week, a programme created to celebrate Hawaiʻi’s music, dance and history while preserving local traditions. In 1991, it was renamed Aloha Festivals. Today, it is a statewide event, with many of its largest celebrations taking place on the island of Oʻahu. 

2. Music Festivals

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, also known as Jazz Fest, is held each year in New Orleans. Originally planned as the Louisiana Heritage Festival, it began in 1970 at Congo Square with local music, Louisiana food, arts and crafts across several stages. Around 350 people attended the first festival, which has grown into a long-running cultural event.

Coachella Music and Arts Festival

Coachella is an annual music and arts festival held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. Founded in 1999 by Paul Tollett and Rick Van Santen, it is organised by Goldenvoice, a subsidiary of AEG Presents. The festival features live performances across multiple stages, with artists representing genres such as rock, pop, indie, hip-hop and electronic dance music, alongside large-scale art installations and sculptures.

3.  Art, Entertainment and Pop Culture Events 

Frieze New York

Frieze New York is an international art fair that began in 2012. Held each spring, it brings together leading galleries with solo, group and themed exhibitions by established and emerging artists. Visitors can view new works, meet artists and art enthusiasts, purchase artwork, and explore galleries around Randall's Island Park, including the David Zwirner Gallery and Skoto Gallery.

Comic-Con International 

San Diego Comic-Con is an annual comic book and pop culture convention held at the San Diego Convention Centre in California. Founded in 1970, it began with a focus on comic books and science fiction and fantasy before expanding to include films, television, gaming, anime and other areas of popular culture.

4. Food Festivals

Seattle Food Festival

Seattle Street Food Festival is Seattle's largest independent street food festival, held each year in August. The two-day event features 36 food stalls, 46 food trucks, artisan vendors and live music by local performers. Visitors can enjoy a variety of cuisines, including Lao, Ethiopian and Mexican.

5. Seasonal and Public Celebrations 

Macy's Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a federal holiday in the United States, observed on the fourth Thursday of November, a date standardised nationwide in 1941. Families and friends gather to share a traditional meal and express gratitude. The holiday was established nationally in 1863, with origins in Thanksgiving observances held in 17th- and 18th-century New England.

New Year's Eve Celebrations

New Year's Eve, observed on 31 December, marks the end of the year and the beginning of a new one. People celebrate with family and friends through parties, fireworks, bell ringing, horns and confetti at midnight. Some also attend church services for prayer, hymn singing and quiet reflection.

6. Unique Festivals

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is a 9-day event held during the first full week of October in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Established in 1972 with 13 hot air balloons, it now features more than 500 balloons each year. It is recognised as the world's largest hot air balloon festival and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.
